San Jose Legends fourth annual celebration and race was another suberb event. This evening’s
focus was on the legendary motorcycle clubs around the area including the Richmond Ramblers, Palo Alto Motorcycle Club, the
Los Gatos motorcycle club and more. A special tribute in film was done during dinner
honoring local riders. After an auction of some old racing posters that earned the Dan Rouit Flat Track Museum a tidy little
sum the evening ended wth special recognition to Craig Rogers who was given a Kawasaki Centurion newly built by Rod Lake and
his friends. Rogers has sponsored many riders but Jared Mees was the first Rogers’ rider to bring
home a national title.
Racing on the replicated original track with the original track staff, before the evening
banquet and celebration, was as exciting as each of the three prior years. A change in the program this
night included qualifying times for the Legends race with Dana Perri qualifying fastest followed by Robert Mc Donnell and
Roy Taboda.
Split into two
races based on bike sizes, Robert Silva got the hole shot and just kept moving. Boo
Boo Bob Scalley and Frank Borba switched the second spot in lap five and again in the twelth lap with Scalley securing the
second place finish. Perri easily won the second Legends race followed by Robert Bacosa and Robert Mc Donnell.
Silva was back on the top of podium Saturday, winning the Vintage A.
The biggest surprise of the night was
the 100cc event that included, Samantha Bergman, from Pensylvania and Mike Banke riding an all electric bike.
Ten riders rode qualifying heats and heat races to earn their positions in the main event. Lined
up on the pole Bergman followed “Short Track Specialist” Perri through the the first six laps getting around him
when he lost the front end in lap seven. She held that lead though the final eight laps to win the class.
Ryan Foster finished third.
Three qualifying heats included fifteen 230cc
riders looking for a place in the ten rider main event. The first four riders from each qualifying heat
went directly to the main. The rest rode a semi that would allow two more riders a position in the main.
Ken Gray and Tony Alves won the two heats. Riders Tedd Mello and Scott Alves earned their spots
from the semi to the main. The main event was bumping and grinding from the green light to the checkers.
A scoring night mare of crashes and lapping led to the podium of Ken Gray who led the race start to finish,, followed by John
Self and Tony Alves. Gray and Alves batteled again Saturday switching the front position, riding wheel
to wheel to the last lap when Alves edged in front for the win. Self rounded out the podium.
Chad
Cose, road racer Garret Willis and Mike Bank rode an exhibition event of three electric motorcycles followed by Jared Mees
and Joe Kopp battling in the final East West Shoot out for the first position with Mees crossing the line in front, Kopp finished
second and Sammy Halbert in the third position. Sunday’s East West shootout’s winner was Zanotti
Racing’s Jake Johnson.
